Forensic FTO for Crime Scene Investigation - (Robert Caceres)

This workshop is designed for Field Training Officers (FTO) in the Forensic field that are responsible for training complex processes, topics, and other principles to trainees but have little to no guidance! As a trainer, not only should you be providing excellent training, but your methodology of deliverance should be exemplary as well. A well-rounded trained investigator will not only make a better impact for your unit but also develop YOU as an excellent trainer. In this workshop, I will provide an understanding of various topics such as: what your roles and responsibilities are as a trainer, developing a structured training program, documenting trainees of their progress via the use of a daily observation reports, and we will also role play “trainer to trainee” in order to test your knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively train and evaluate new forensic

trainees.

Detect More Evidence: Extend Your Search Beyond the Visible - (Nathan Carey)

Various types of evidence are often overlooked at a crime scene because they are not visible to the naked eye. When using an alternate light source with the proper corresponding filter, it is still possible to miss items of evidence due to background interference or improper angle of illumination. The purpose of this lecture will be to introduce attendees to various methods utilized in detecting evidence beyond the visible range. An introduction to light theory and techniques utilizing wavelengths of light beyond the visible range on notoriously difficult surfaces will be discussed. This will include ultra-violet and infrared examination to detect the presence of biological fluids and gunshot residue. Novel oblique lighting techniques will be explored to detect evidence on raised surfaces and footwear impressions. Bandpass filtering techniques will also be explored to aid in the detection of evidence at crime scenes.

Essential Macro Photography Technics (Bob Gallagher & Ioan Truta) 

This workshop will introduce the participants to the various lighting techniques used to document close-up and macro-evidentiary items. This workshop will further expose participants to essential camera settings, review camera gear, and lighting equipment necessary for successful outcomes. In addition, participants will have several opportunities to practice the techniques presented during the workshop. In order to better understand the equipment and techniques, the participants must bring a DSLR or MILC camera, macro lens, flash, sync cord, flashlight, and any other equipment that they generally use to document close-up evidence
